Dr. Don Allen completed his undergraduate studies at Bowling Green University, with majors in music, composition and psychology. He completed his first Masters degree (MSW) at the University of Maryland and received a Masters of Philosophy degree and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City, also in Social Work. He has been in private practice in the Columbus area since 1995. He has worked for Harding Hospital and The Ohio State University (outpatient services at the Neuroscience Center), He has been a Student Assistant Program Coordinator for four different school districts in central Ohio for over 12 years, and for the Richland County Juvenile Courts as a Program Coordinator. He has worked in community mental health as well as Ridge Cliff Hospital in Willoughby, Ohio where he worked with children (in- patient) ages 4 to 18 and helped develop the unit. He also worked as a consultant to the hospital’s drug and alcohol program.
After 2012, Dr. Allen moved his practice towards specializing in the treatment of marriage and emotional trauma. He particularly enjoys conducting family and marital therapy. He treats a full range of psychotherapeutic issues including anxiety and depressive disorders, particularly as a pertain to marriage and emotional trauma. Dr. Allen is published in the area of juvenile delinquency in the Journal of Linear Regression. He has taught full-time for Ohio University, and as an adjunct faculty for Columbia University, The Ohio State University, and Ashland University.
He is a certified Gottman therapist and is an advanced trainer for the program. He trains and consults with clinicians to move towards certification. He is also certified in Emotion, Focus Therapy, and was trained by Susan Johnson herself. He is also certified, treats and consults in the practice of, eye movement, desensitization, and reprocessing (EMDR) therapeutic techniques.
